“What is past is prologue”

“What is past is prologue”

~William Shakespeare

Everything we do leads to new ideas, new questions, and new discoveries. We constantly build on past experiences and events. I think this is exciting. The things we have done in the past are merely stepping stones to what we will do in the future. “What is Past is prologue”.

I find this to be encouraging. I make more mistakes than I care to admit. But if instead of thinking of them as mistakes, I thought of them as opportunities, as a lesson, I could use them to improve in my craft. I could take lessons from previous, less successful attempts and try a new approach. A different technique, and then my results would vary. I could improve. Or at the very least, learn one more way not to do something. All of these are valuable lessons. I can take them all with me, build on my experience, and improve as an artist.

I think it's important to learn from our mistakes. To identify the things that did not work and to try to learn from them. Take that experience and try something new, something different. We grow stronger and better adapted this way. We gain experience and knowledge when we make mistakes. So don’t think of them as mistakes; think of them as a prologue. A beginning to the story that is you.
