Simplicity
Simplicity! I crave it. In this world of “hurry up and wait”, “It must be done yesterday”, and “Pics or it didn’t happen,” things can get hectic and overly complicated instantly. Perhaps it's my midlife crisis speaking, but I've found that the moments when I have nothing to do, which are few and far between these days, are the moments I truly enjoy. Having a moment just sitting on my bench in the backyard, listening to the breeze rustling through the leaves on the trees, is a truly cherished moment. Quiet moments with no “outside noise”, no obligation, no email I can no longer ignore, nowhere I need to be, and nothing more for me to do than just enjoy the moment, these have become the moments I look forward to.
These moments have been influencing my Photography lately. I have been shooting more “simple” scenes, which some might call minimalistic images. I have always preferred the “intimate landscape” to the grand vista when it comes to my own photography. I enjoy the little things. However, I have found that I am actively trying to create “quiet images”-images with very little going on. Simple backgrounds, an obvious single subject, a long exposure to “stretch time” in an attempt to make a moment last a little longer. And maybe that is why I photograph scenes such as these. To try and capture that moment of simplicity and quiet. To try and hold on to it and keep it for myself. To be able to look back and remember a brief moment where all I had to do was observe and enjoy it.
Take a moment for yourself. Sit and listen to the waves gently lapping at the shore, the birds chirping in the trees. Turn off your ringer and enjoy a moment of simplicity and quiet. Enjoy your moments.
